Artist and designer Jurica Gotal was born in 1980 in Zagreb and now lives and works in a small town situated in the central part of Croatia. ‘Dependability’ 2004 Drawing from traumatic personal experience, Gotal presents a story of social and physical change during times of conflict. Sitting amongst the boughs is the metallic figure of the father, who has left his family for the battlefield. Depicted without legs, Gotal alludes to the physical threat of the battlefield (literally ‘…one foot in the grave’) and the threat to the family structure The central support to the entire piece represents the father’s inward thoughts to his family, which give him the emotional support to continue fighting. The harsh focused stare of the head speaks of the only thing left of his former life, namely the pride and dignity of the old days and his ongoing positivism as he looks towards the future. |
