Somenaith Maity[Indian Artist] Born in 1960 in West Bengal, Maity is recognised as one of Bengal’s important new emerging painters and has already exhibited his works at many major Indian and European galleries. He has received scholarships and awards from most of the Indian Fine Art institutions, including the Birla Academy Award and the AIFACS and has works in many private and public collections including a permanent collection at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Thematically, Sominath uses urban space as his muse, bathing his city-scapes in a celestial light where the lines of reality disappear into a spiraling mass of abstraction. Maity’s colors and textures are strong, bringing to the forefront the life of the urban sprawls that he paints, and investing them with a force that works beyond the life of their inhabitants, keeping them ticking no matter who comes or goes, lives or dies. |
